All new home range at Kmart!

August 4, 2015

I make no secret that I love Kmart.
I love the range of everything, and even more so.. I love the price.

Their range of homewares has been increasing in volume over the last 12 months quite dramatically and now I see there is even more and the stuff is AWESOME!!

We have been planning on renovating our house now for ages but we just can’t seem to agree on what to do so it has been put on hold yet again…However, every time I head into Kmart I end up buying stuff to put away for when I get my new kitchen/dining room/bedroom… and so on. Now, I have quite the collection of stuff waiting… now if we could just agree on the more boring things of what to put where structurally. (yawn)

If you haven’t been into Kmart recently.. head on in. You’ll be pleasantly surprised!
Wanna have a look first… check it out here.

Coconut Bread

This is an awesome alternative to banana bread…. not that there’s anything wrong with banana bread, don’t get me wrong but this is great for something a little different. It’s great for the kids to help in the kitchen (if you are so inclined) as it’s an easy one. Pop this in the toaster for a quick breakfast with a smear of jam (or if you are like me, quite a big dollop thanks) or it’s great as a lunchbox snack. Either way your house will smell frigin awesome while this baby is in the oven. Click here to go straight to Bill Granger’s recipe. I’m taking you straight to Bill as he does it best!

Movie Review…. Spy

May 29, 2015

Spy_New_Official_Poster_JPostersYesterday I was invited to see this movie with a group of my friends. I ummm’d and ahhhh’d over whether I actually wanted to see it because I wasn’t sure if I was up for another ‘silly’ movie but oh my god I am SO glad I did!

Melissa McCarthy nails the role of the unlikely spy trying to capture the bad guy (girl played by Rose Byrne) going ahead with a nuclear bomb deal. Jason Statham is absolutely hilarious in this and plays the role of the deadshit wannabe C.I.A agent to perfection. Jude Law is there for eye candy and not much else but still… worth a look!

If you liked Bridesmaids then you will like this also. At one point I had to race to the loo’s as I seriously thought I was going to be in trouble if I had another laughing outburst. Even on the way home from the movie I kept thinking about 2 words, ”Swedish Bitch”, and I was laughing again. Perfect movie for a girls night. Hilarious.

P.S….. There is a fair amount of swearing in this… However, If you’re one of my followers and know my work I think you will all be ok. 😉

Crunchy Cinnamon Muesli

March 17, 2015

About 12 months back I was making this every week for my girls and then one weekend I didn’t make any and then it got forgotten about until this week and my middle daughter asked if I could start making it again. Of course I am happy to oblige because I forgot how frigin delicious it is.

It is too much to have as a regular muesli, but to have it sprinkled over some yoghurt and fresh fruit for some added texture and flavour it is perfect. My girls even like it over vanilla ice cream for an easy dessert. You can use it various ways and I may have even sprinkled it over toast with Nutella once or twice.

Give it a go… and your house will smell like a giant cinnamon doughnut while it’s in the oven!

So you need to start by preheating your oven to 180c and lining a baking sheet with some baking paper. Then in a large pan melt 125gr unsalted butter, 60gr brown sugar and 2 tsp cinnamon. Once melted add 300gr rolled oats and 120gr slivered almonds. Stir to coat all the oats and then tip onto the prepared baking sheet and whack into the oven for 10 minutes. Pull it out of the oven and give it a little stir just to break it up a bit and then put back in the oven for a further 10 minutes.

Once out of the oven and cool enough you can then start munching on the little clusters it might have formed. BE WARNED- DO NOT EAT STRAIGHT FROM THE OVEN!!!!! It really holds its heat and will surprise you how long it takes to cool down. Let it cool completely and then transfer to an air tight container and store for around a week. It might not last that long though. 😉

Apple and cinnamon muffins

February 17, 2015

muffinsI go through a LOT of muffins in my house, so trying to come up with something new, that everybody likes every week sometimes proves to be a bit difficult. However, all 3 of my girls love these ones more than any other. Extremely easy and you will want to make these for the smell that wonders through your house alone!

First preheat your oven to 180C and line your muffin tray .

Heres what you’ll need,

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1tbs baking powder
  • 2tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 medium granny smith apples, peeled and chopped
  • 125gr butter, melted and cooled
  • 2 eggs lightly whisked
  • 3/4 cup milk

Sift together the flour, baking powder and cinnamon into a bowl, then add the brown sugar and apple pieces. Give a little stir to combine the dry ingredients. Make a well in the centre and add the melted butter, eggs and milk. Stir to combine taking care not to over work it. Spoon into muffin tin and cook for 20 minutes. You will know when they are ready by the awesome smell. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack. Done.

Nutella mug cake

February 9, 2015

Ok so I will be honest with you, this is most certainly not my recipe but ohhhhmygod!! It is cakey, puddingy perfection. I mean it’s Nutella, how can it be bad?

The recipe is from a blog called Tammileetips, the ingredients are obviously American but we have everything that’s the same and its all metric measurements so no need for converting.

If you plan on making this, wait until the kiddies are in bed so you don’t have to share. Or, if you’re nicer than me go ahead. All it needs is a bit of vanilla ice cream and some quite time in front of the tv and you, my friend.. are very welcome.

About this..

January 7, 2015

Well 2015 is well underway and I’m sure you are all going about your business with your children. Whether you are away on holidays or if you are like me , just enjoying the harmonious sounds of your children getting along and not fighting AT ALL!!.. (Obviously that’s a joke…as if that ever happens)

But I don’t want to talk about children. I want to talk about us… The Mums. The above image is what I want to bring to your attention. I am around A LOT of women…all from different circles but there is one thing I have noticed a lot of last year – Women just existing to do shit for everyone else. You know it…. You do it all the time.

So…. what I suggest is… It’s time for us to do something that we have wanted to do for the longest time, that for some reason has been put on the back burner. Women…… It’s time. It’s time to do it. Whether it be to do a course in something, to tackle that 10kgs that has been pissing you off,  to tackle the spare room that is a shitfight, tackle the DIY project thats been sitting there for 12 months, tackle the pantry so it looks like the one on Pinterest that you have had your eye on. I don’t care what it is but it’s time to do it, and this is the year it has to be done.

Last year I started this blog…. This year, I’m going to be doing a whole lot more with different reviews, more easy recipes and just things in general I like to share and obviously me mouthing off every now and then as well. I have gotten a feel for it over the last 6 months and I know I can do more with it now…. So there is my thing I’m going to tackle. And conquer.

Just one more thing…. Help another woman out. Don’t hang shit on her because she does things different to you. I’ve said it before and I will no doubt say it again…. We are all trying to do the same job. So how about we start giving others a bit of a hand. I will guarantee you will feel far more awesome about being nice to someone than being awful to them.

It’s time people… GO TACKLE!!!…. and I want to hear from you when you conquer!

When mums let loose..

December 24, 2014

So this time of year is hectic.  HEC – TIC. We all have so much to do in regard to just Christmas alone but then there’s also the end of year presentations for the kids at school/sporting activities, work parties, husbands work parties and so on. It seems it is just one thing after another, going from place to place seeing this group of people and that group of people..Some you know.. some you don’t. Just trying to be polite to all those who you have met before but for the life of you can NOT remember their name…Relentless. Exhausting. Everyone is tired, stressed, worn out, freaking out about where all the money is going… you know what I mean.

A few nights back I attended yet another Christmas party, only this time it was with people that I know and am more than happy to spend my time with. It was then that I realised how nice it is to see mums let loose. Mums who all year have travelled here and there for their children…spent countless hours waiting for them, watching them, frantically making sure everything was done so they had enough time to grab a quick coffee in between drop offs. As mums we do so much that others just don’t think about. How does all this shit get done if not for us? I came across this little funny the other week and thought it was just so true.

photo The same applies for Christmas. We get the presents sorted, paid for (how I do not know), wrapped perfectly making sure that the parents paper and gift cards do not match any of Santas paper and gift cards, (my kids are all over that!), figure out what everyone will be eating for THEIR special magical Christmas lunch, plan it, go buy the food along with 50,000 other crazy ladies, make sure this one is catered for because she won’t eat prawns and  hewonteatporkandshewonteatcustardand… AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! ………….and who worries about us? ………. Anyone? ………………. Anyone?

My point is… It is our Christmas too after all. It was just nice the other night to see mums just having a good time with their kids and the other mums collectively. It is the end of yet another year and it is time to be grateful for what we have in our lives. So mums… give yourselves a pat on the back and have some patience for all the other mums who are out there doing exactly the same as you. We are all in it together trying to achieve the same thing.

We are all pretty awesome you know.

Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful families. xx

What is happening?

December 17, 2014

On Monday this week on MOAA Facebook page I opened up the week with a quote saying “Good Morning Monday, Have a nice week”. Hmmm, little did anyone know it wasn’t to be. Only 2 hours later we would be glued to our screens, whether they be televisions, phones, tablets or computers hoping and praying that what were seeing wasn’t real. If it was real could it please just end nicely and let us imagine for a minute that this isn’t happening in our beautiful part of the world.

Sadly, it wasn’t so. Indeed it was real and it was happening right in front of us.  Martin Place Sydney.  Not the U.S.  Not the Middle East.  Sydney.  Hard to imagine isn’t it? Ducking in to grab a quick coffee on the way to work, or before you tackle the Christmas shopping and have that happen to you. People just going about their business and then that. I can’t even imagine.

I’m not equipped to be offering any kind of opinion as to why this lunatic feels the need to make his point in such a manner, nor am I going to offer anything on how extremism has no place in our society… we all know that… What I will say is that I am so totally disappointed in our justice system. Who the hell is making these laws regarding bail, parole and who gets a slap on the wrist and who doesn’t?

We hear it all the time. Out on bail, on parole, so many hours of community service, some piss poor fine when the bastards should be locked up. This is just not good enough.

I will however offer my opinion on this matter. It may seem extremely right wing conservative but I couldn’t give a shit. What I will point out before I begin is this has nothing to do with race, religion or anything of anyone else’s belief system. I will never have a problem with what others choose to believe in, as I have a very strong beliefs myself. This is me having my say over the way some things are carried out in our country.

If we have an Iranian refugee who is granted a life in our beautiful country who is in trouble with the law only a few short years later then why the hell is he allowed to stay? I know there are laws protecting asylum seekers and that is fair enough…. I understand this…but what I do not understand is how, when he has a wrap sheet a mile long does he somehow, not only manage to abuse his refugee status but then “slip through the cracks” of the authorities.

To me “slipping through the cracks” means that we are unaware of him, He wasn’t on our radar. This is bullshit… He was very much on our radar. Letters sent to Diggers families should have been enough to have his status revoked. Yet no, he was given a tiny bullshit sized slap on the wrist. Then after that we have countless sexual assault charges and accessory to the atrocious murder of his ex wife. Yet STILL he is allowed to wander our streets. Not only that but the woman who was responsible for the murder is out on bail. HOW??????

Cast your mind back to the Jill Meagher case. The outrage that occured  when we learnt that the maggot responsible for her murder was indeed out on parole. We were disgusted. Whats been done?

So my question to our justice system and the bleeding hearts of the world is this… DO WE HAVE YOUR ATTENTION NOW? CAN YOU SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SOCIETY BECAUSE OF YOUR FUCKING STUPID LAWS? The criminal justice system is meant to keep us safe by putting away those who are intent on doing us harm. You are failing. Miserably. It seems the laws are there to protect the criminals not the victims.

Enough.  Just enough. We are Australian citizens and we ALL deserve better. Not just the minorities…. ALL of us.

Mums on Blogs…Monique van Tulder

November 28, 2014

  1. Who are you and what is the name of your blog?….My name is Monique van Tulder and I dispense advice on the good things in life at The Urban Mum; a Luxury Travel & Lifestyle blog (…for families that like to travel in style…).
  1. What is your blog about?…..I began writing under the guise of a Domestic Goddess; I basically ate my way through Nigella’s books; took pretty pictures, and offered up my take on being a Mum & Nutritionist. It was loads of fun and I had lots to say about Parenting – eventually though it wore thin, because as much as I love baking – I love travel more than my kitchen. Essentially I wanted to have someone cook for me…My professional career was in the Travel Industry: Airlines; Hotels; Destinations. I travelled (a lot) for twenty or so years for work. Now I travel for pleasure (and write about how to do it with kids in tow…a whole new ballgame…) I do love food so I sneak in a story about yummy things on occasion (these days it is usually reviews about good places to eat…)
  1. How old is your blog?…Nearly four years old – although I did take a mini-break last year while I focused on Travel Writing for various publications.
  1. What made you start blogging in the first place? ….I love writing…I have written three novels (unpublished and probably never to see the light of day…). With a blog it is brilliant to have your own space to fill with whatever lovelies float your boat. Editorial control is luxuriously self-indulgent; and if people respond to my words it is a fabulous bonus.
  1. What was your last big purchase?….Oh dear; I wonder if The Husband is reading this…I am a shocker; Summer wardrobe at Fleur Wood; prior to that a new handbag in Hong Kong (cost per wear it is a fantastic investment – I will continue saying that to myself for a while). Earlier in the year I visited India with girlfriends – let’s just say I now have enough textiles to last a lifetime. I don’t think Father Christmas needs to visit me this year…
  1. Any favourite online shops?….Book Depository; Susan Avery Florist & eBay (I know there are more thrilling online options – I just seem to find whatever I need on eBay…). Net-A-Porter for dreaming…
  1. What’s the one thing you can’t go a day without?….Coffee and exercise – I am so much more pleasant having indulged in both. Oh and a cuddle from my boys; even the pre-pubescent 12 year old who now grunts instead of speaking…
  1. Ideal Saturday night?…. Thursday night is Date Night; by Saturday my energy levels are low, very, very low – I am only capable of holding a glass of wine while slumped in front of Breaking Bad (late to that party, loving it….).
  1. Do you have a particular style?….Monochrome – black, white, grey – classic. I like quality over quantity. I have some gorgeous Vintage Pieces that add a unique feel… For resort holidays I love lots of silk and bright colours.

10. Any advice for mums who might be stuck in a bit of a rut? ….Take some time out for yourself – as big as a holiday or as small as a walk around the block. If you are refreshed and your soul replenished; most other things in life; family; and business fall into place.

If you are in a style rut; get an amazing classic haircut then think about who your style icons might be (I love Jackie Onassis on holidays in the 1970’s; Emmanuelle Alt from French Vogue; and Sarah Harris from UK Vogue). You don’t need to shop big to emulate your style dream – just clever. Target, Seed and Country Road always have great pieces at good price points. If you have items in your wardrobe that don’t make you feel amazing – get rid of them.   It is a bit of a cliché – but the French women really do chic well.
